On behalf of the New England Chapter of the APWA, I extend my sincere gratitude to all of the DPW community that paid such a beautiful tribute to our brother, John Doherty, today in Melrose. John passed away as a result of injuries sustained while serving his community.
Though many of us may not have known John, more than 200 women and men from across the New England Chapter showed up to pay their last respects and to support John's family. The sea of bright yellow jackets and the number of DPW vehicles with their lights flashing was an overwhelming sight.
We have the Chapter's Bereavement Committee to thank for coordinating the DPWs' response, the Police Departments that escorted us to the cemetery, and those that remembered John in their prayers.
I pray that we never have to gather like this again, but my heart is warmed knowing that we will be there for one another should the need arise.
Sincerely, John K. Westerling President, New England American Public Works Association
